A Note from your School Nurse:

There are so many reasons for kids to get to bed late, especially now when days are long.  I wanted to remind parents how vital it is that your children get enough sleep. According to a recent article, written by Dr. John Voth from Colorado, pre-schoolers and school-age children need 10-12 hours of sleep per night. Without enough sleep, their ability to concentrate, learn, and have enough energy for their very full school day will be affected.

If your child isn't well rested when they come to school, we may see short attention spans, low levels of energy, emotional outbursts that might include crying easily, being overly sensitive, impatient or cranky. Not getting enough sleep can take the fun out of learning and playing.

A bedtime routine can help. A bedtime routine could include a healthy snack, (not sugar or caffeine…..try fresh fruit, veggies, popcorn, yogurt), a bath, tooth brushing and a bedtime story. Even if your child reads well and enjoys silent reading, the sound of the human voice in the act of reading is extremely soothing. As little as 10 minutes of reading before bed is good. It's quality snuggle time with the advantage of helping children settle down.  Because some of our children have to get up so early, bedtime can be as early as 8 PM. They might complain, but an early bedtime will pay off and give the household adults a little down time as well. Good luck, all you parents and guardians of our precious kids….your job is not easy.
